scribbled angelfish
Right now i have the option of purchasing a scribbled angelfish that is 1-3" in size. What are people's experiences with this fish? How reef safe are they?

Good aquarium fish, should have plenty of swimming room, may eat soft corals, nip at LPS and zoos and clam mantles. They get to about 9" at full size so you wouldn't be able to have too many fish in the tank (reference Scott Micheal's "Marine Fishes"). I don't have any experience with them, but I hope this helps.

I raised a scribbled angel in a 60g FOWLR tank from 1 1/2 inches to 6 inches over a 6-year period.
Once they are established, they are very hardy fish and will take just about any food, including flake. Getting them to eat was somewhat of a problem, which I eventually solved by putting in one stalk of romaine lettuce daily until he had established himself. After a day or two of eyeing up the lettuce, he started nipping at it and eventually would rip it up within an hour of my putting it into the tank. There must not be any antagonists in the aquarium that object to his presence. If there are, he won't eat and will eventually waste away. If you decide to buy him and after you put him into your tank, (QT is highly recommended but only in a well-established QT) you see that one of the existing fish is harassing him, you must take steps to separate the fish. This happened to mine with my already-established majestic angel. I used a piece of eggcrate to separate them for a few weeks to let them get used to seeing each other. After a few weeks I removed the eggcrate and all was well. As far as being reef-safe, I would say no. But they are such beautiful specimens, especially when they are juveniles, it might be worth a little damage to your corals to have him. Whatever you decide, good luck. |

Good luck with your new acquisition.
In my experience, scribbled angels are second only to the clownfish for "personality". Beautiful fish. |
