how do you clean the inside of an acrylic tank without scratching it

Carefully with a credit card. Kent also make acrylic algae scrapers, again though you need to be careful.

yep it's not fun at all. best is not let it get out of hand. make sure when you are scraping it doesn't get between the card, scraper etc and the tank.
