Going DSB

I have about an inch of sand in my display, and I am going to bring the total depth up to 4" and pull the mud out of my fuge. I have been to the GARF website many times and have seen tanks like Andreas' on reefvideos.com and like the success that dsbs can bring. I know that there are plenty of bare bottom enthusiasts out there, but I was wondering if some DSBers could advise me on how to add my sand.

Should I pull out most of the existing sand? I have had a hair algae problem lately. Should I add about an inch at a time and bring the level up gradually?

Or... should I pull out everything and dump all four inches in. I bought Carib Sea Aragonite Oolite sand.
