Koralia Pumps

I just did a water change and now my pump is not working. I tried unplugging it and taking out the impeller but neither of those worked. Would it being caked in algae be causing it to stop?

Plug it in and use a plastic straw or something to jump start it. It prolly has calcium buildup inside the hole where the magnet goes. Soak it in vinegar for a few hours to clean it out.

Well I looked inside that hole and it looked pretty clean but I will try to jump start it.

If you have one of the older ones with a ceramic shaft you can contact Hydor for a free stainless steel version that all the new ones come with. Otherwise, just clean it well. Vinegar will remove calcium deposits over several hours or dilute muriatic acid will do the same in minutes. Separate the shaft and impeller before soaking so the acid can get inside and do its job more easily.

How do you know if you have one of the older ones? I bought mine a couple of months ago.

They're the same pump, they just started using stainless steel shafts instead of ceramic. The ceramic ones were prone to breaking. If you bought yours a couple months ago it probably has a stainless steel shaft.

I just got a Korallia 3, 4 months ago and the impeller stuck when I shut it off for the first time (this never happens with my Tunzes.) I just put my finger in and pushed the impeller to jump start it and it kicked right up. Yes Yes, I know someone will say I should have used a straw, toothpick or even a dead acro tip to do the same job so I wouldnt kill my finger. Well, I still have my finger and the Korallia works, so....there ya go

BTW, did the jumpstart work for you?

I lose one about every year for no particular reason. They just die. I box them up and ship them out and start the warranty period over. I just lost one yesterday. I always have a spare now

Where do you get your muratic acid from? Is this stuff pretty nasty, does it require mult risings.

Any of the big-box type stores carry it. Usually used for cleaning stonework, mortar, sidewalks, etc.

I get mine from Menard's which may be a local chain, but a lot of people can find it at Home Depot or Lowes as Musky1963 said. I found it in the paint section. When you use it just be sure to dilute it a lot. I just estimate, but a ratio of no more than 1 part acid to 20 parts water is usually recommended. You should rinse it well, but it's not going to melt your skin off or anything once diluted. I've put my hands in it and it can itch/sting a little, so just be careful. Also, don't breathe the fumes when opening/pouring the bottle.

The jumpstart did not work. I'm going to take it out and try giving it a deep clean in hopes that it will work. Also, the pump is a Koralia 1; if that has anything to do with it.

Could just be dead. I had a $1000 Samsung fridge die after 36 days. If so, call Frank at Hydor - he can help get you a new one - (916) 920-5222
