moved tank and bringing down nitrates

Ok, I am trying to get my tank lower in nitrates, I am at 20ppm(API). I had an eclipse hood with a bio wheel. They were high. I just moved from a 30g to a 55g on Monday. I only used 20g of water from that tank. I have two eclipse hoods going with no bio wheels at the moment(till my sump finishes up).

In the interest in lowering nitrates, when can I do another water change and how much? Ammonia and nitrites are at 0. I do need to double my live rock, which I will do within a week or so.

some pics for viewing pleasure.

the addition of more live rock will certainly give you a cycle. i would wait until then to do your water changes. if it is going to be a little bit, i would change 15 gallons at most and wait atleast a week after setting the 55 up.

yep it sure should, when you get it swish it in a bucket for saltwater to help remove excess detrius from it before you put it in the tank. it would be like blowing it off with a powerhead. just check your parameters after the addition and go from there. and once you get your sump going thing can balance out naturally. are you having a fuge with the sump?

Is this to be a FOWLR tank? If so, I wouldn't be too concerned with nitrate at 20ppm. Use weekly WCs to maintain it. With that lionfish in a 55, the waste generated by it will surely challenge the biological system. The denitrification process is going to take some time to develop so WCs are your best bet for exporting nitrates in your tanks infancy.

Thanks, yeah I hear lions are heavy bio loaders. It is only FOWLR at the moment, once stable will add corals etc...

I was just concerned with too many water changes in a short time frame.

thanks for the help all.
