Fragging/Growing Acans

This is a very specific question. I've fragged these plenty of times in the past and that's not where I'm going with this.

I'm planning on picking up some nice Acan colonies and would like to seed a prop setup for them (I've got four prop tanks in the works). But I got around to thinking, since Acans seem to be encrusting and don't grow a thick skeleton. All the frags I've ever made, seen or received have been on a pretty thick piece of live rock, that they'd previously encrusted over.

I'd like to know if anyone has had better/worse success by cutting off most of the rock on the bottom as well? It would seem to me that being able to grow the Acans on a surface like tiles or something more flat would be feasible and simplify future fragging versus a 1-2" (or more) thick piece of live rock.

Anyone?
