sump builds
I have been looking at some sump design's I have a 40 Gallon Tank (Glass) and I want to make it into a sump.
Where can I find simple guidelines that are reliable? Pictures are a plus. I have tried the search function here but it never works. |

I don't think there much info regarding the glass sump but plenty of information on the basic designs. When using glass it is best to use glass baffles and use reef safe silicone to secure them into place. |

another question... I just thought of somthing.. there is a company down the road that does plastic welding.. would that be ok to assemble the sump if I were to have one made from acrylic?
or is that even worth it? |

I'm sure they could make you a nice sump. It will likely be a pricey way to go.

1/4 inch glass for the baffles and use 100% silicone. not totally difficult, and it doesn't have to look pretty, just functional.

make sure your sides arent tempered when you drill them!
or just make it all out of acrylic (much easier IMO) |

See right now I am thinking I might just wait on the sump and get a drilled tank later.. I don't want to drill the tank I have because I am not sure if the glass is tempered.. and I don't wanna find out.
The other big thing is that I DON'T WANNA CHEAP OUT. So I might just keep going with my current setup... I have 2 Emperor 400's and put 3 power heads in the tank and run a 9010 skimmer.. also I have a canister filter with just water running through it for flow.. I might trade it in for an extra power head. I was going to put chemical filtration in the canister but I can still put that in the bio wheels. How does that sound to you guys..??? and plan for a Sump when I get a Drilled tank. There is no sence spending money on a overflow box and setup when I can put that money towards a drilled tank. |

That's a tough call. If you have a 90 that you like then it wouldn't be that much trouble to drill the back and slap in an overflow box. You get yourself a few baffles cut and polished for the 40gal and your almost set. It's doubtful that the back of the tank is tempered.
But if that's out of your comfort zone then don't do it. Save up your pennies and buy one that already drilled. You could always use a good hang-on style overflow box in the mean time. Last edited by Playa-1; 07/09/2008 at 10:57 AM. |

Well see I have heard some bad things about those :-D if the siphon quits then what? is there some sort of fail safe one? I do like the water but I don't really feel like swimming in my basment.

They do have some that a safer then other by design but they all require regular attention. You can't get lazy when you have equipment like that
