how do you position your pumps?

i keep seeing pics of pumps mounted on the back glass, pointing forward. i have mine on the sides, pointing slightly around the rocks on one side, and through the rocks on another

kinda hard to see, but you can sort of make out the MJs

what's the preference?

i do have some sand moving around and i'm not a fan of that.

I try to have as much random flow as possible. I do not have a pump controller so I create this by having the pumps pump the water into each other. Then you get the water hitting together and dispersing in random directions. If you have your pumps on the sides face them towards each other on each end. The water will go straight into each other and go in all directions.

Then you can position any other pumps to create flow to wherever you want. I judge it by my corals. If i see them moving in all directions instead of just one, then I know my flow is pretty good.

+1 best way to go, and most economical.

doing good. keep em on the side glass at each other. and look for chaotic movement of the corals. the more chaotic the better.

its difficult to actually say really, start with them in a certain position and then move them if your not happy, mine are at the back and sides, ive probably moved them 2-3 times in the last 6-7 months and still not happy

also depends on what type of corals you are keeping. Some require high flow and some very little. Then you get into real tricky positioning.
