Your opinion

I have had my 50 gallon reef tank for a little over a year now without a skimmer or sump. The tank is in an area that does not allow that much space for a sump or a skimmer. However, i have read about how necessary it is to have a skimmer for a tank and i have been looking at some. I am thinking about the Deltec MCE 300, depending on how large and bulky it is. I also do not want to have to mess around with it that much. I would like to hear your opinions on this skimmer. Thanks!

Probably one of the best, if not THE best, HOB skimmer you can get. A little pricey but worth it. I don't have one personally but everything I've seen and read about them leads me to believe it's a great choice.

If you don't want to do a skimmer just make sure you are running either carbon or something like Seachem Purigen. Those will help pull organics out of the water just like a skimmer does. You will need to change it regularly since you are relying on that solely to pull organics out of the water.

A skimmer isn't necessary but it does help a lot. You should be fine with some kind of chemical filtration and water changes.

To answer your question about hanging it on the side, you can hang it wherever you want.
