noisy water inlet

any idea on how to reduce the noise from water going down the tube from the main tank to the sump? I had never witnessed so much noise by this activity before.

Thanks!!

go to these guys [RC sponsor]:

and click on the link for "wet/dry overflow" and see which of the stockman aqua-silencers fits your system. mine does a good job in my HOB overflow box. just every once in a while now I get a gurgle. otherwise its quiet.

HTH

Is there a way to DIY that thing? It's gotta be a fairly simple construct.

Is it a bulkhead fitting with a pvc nipple attached? That sounds like a pretty easy DIY. I just posted a thread in the new to the hobby section with no luck

I made a DURSO Drain for my 24" tall tank about 5 years ago.
It has been VERY quiet and flawless the whole time.

I just added a Hofer Gurgle Buster to my tank and I can't believe I went so long without it. It only took about 5 minutes to make and $2. I highly recommend it.

If it's a vortex (whirlpool) and sounds like water draining, I had the same thing in my overflow. What I did was put a piece of flexable tube (about 1/4 inch to 3/8 inch in width) part way down the top of the pipe in the overflow box (not enough to plug it though). That was enough to break up the vortex and I didn't have the sound anymore. Really cheap fix.

Keith A - I'd forgotten that method. I tried it and it worked for a time - just my luck the cheap fix didn't work for some reason. I've heard of others doing the same with good success, and I'd forgotten that.

gusmanda, if you try Keith's solution just make sure you clip or somehow fix the tubing in place so it doesn't get sucked down the tubing - maybe mine was too short?
