Nori for Tangs
So I bought some Nori for my new Tang who is in QT (powder brown tang). He is nipping at it every so often which is good. My question is when should you take out the leftover nori that is uneaten? At the end of the day or in a few hours??? Will it cause an ammonia spike if you leave it in? Also I have been doing a 1 gallon change per day just so everything stays in check. Is that ok or can I do a 1 gallon every 2 days?

I would remove it after 5 minutes. You don't want it to break down inside the QT tank.
Water changes in a QT tank are very important. Depending on how much water your tank holds, I would do it every day for a 10g tank and every other day for a 20.

I agree with old salty
I would not use nori--rather Sera spirualina algae tablets. These stick to the sides of the tank, and don't break down very easily and the tangs love picking at them all day.

Well I was doing a 1 gallon change for the past few days. I will try every other day and test the water and see if I maintain parameters. I will try the Algae tablets...thanks for the tip.

Your new tang may not initially recognize the stuck on tablets as food. Hopefully, he will nibble them. If not, just keep feeding the nori. I've had great luck with using rubber bands to tie the nori to rubble rock and then pushing it into the rockwork in my qt tank. Tangs are grazers in the wild and will start picking at your rockwork and get a taste of it.
How big is your qt tank? It's impossible to know if 1 gallon a day is enough water to change without knowing the size of the tank and the size of the tang. If you are in doubt about the water quality, test the qt tank water for ph, ammonia, nitrates and nitrites. Do a large water change if the levels are not correct, as tangs do best in excellent quality water. Good luck! Joyce |
