Digging sand from the ocean
I am going to be at Indian Rocks Beach (Tampa) next week for a beach vacation.
I am thinking about digging sand from the ocean and bringing it home with me for my reef tank. How bad of an idea is this? |

bad if you consider you might get caught by the police who take a dim view of this practise
In other threads it has generally been considered not a good idea due to the pollution of innercoastal waters. It also can contain organisms that might not be reef friendly. Yet others say it is great for introducing new bacteria to the tank that you might not have in it. Something to think about anyways

I used to use sand from the sea when I was living near the sea. But you will get all the other things which comes with the sand which might not be too benificial. If you do so make sure you clean the sand well (with saltwater of course) by constantly stiring up the sand and filtering it (and changing the saltwater quite a few times).
