Any one know the PAR on 400w Radium 20k running off coralvue electronic ballasts?

I don't know the par but Radiums are not designed to run on electronic ballasts so I would avoid them.

Current Tank Info: 150g sps Reef (now FOWLR after a devastating crash due to chiller) , 2x400w MH (Icecap ballast, Lumenmax 2, Reeflux 12k SE), Deltec AP701, Grotech Tec III, Chiller, 2 x Tunze 6101, 1 x 6205 (+ m/c), bla bla

What they are not designed to run on is the HQI ballast. Which overdrives them and makes them wear out in a short time period. They would technically run much better (for the bulb that is) on an e ballast.

The eballast will also overdrive the 400w radium (because is actually a 360w bulb) and shorten its life. The only ballast in the US recommended for the 400w radium is a magnetic pulse start M135/M155 ballast.

Well you are correct about the hqi being the preferred ballast by many.

Is this also true for the new digital e ballasts?

For the 400w yes, unless you have a dimmable ballast with some type of digital screen that let you adjust the wattage to the exact desire one.

OK, so in short, if you have 400w coralvue electronic ballasts, just avoid this bulb.

Thanks for all the replies,

Tony

What about the dimmable 400w coralvues? I think they can be dimmed down to 360w correct?

I'm not going to change my ballasts, I may just try some 10k reeflux bulbs - I'm running BLV 14ks at the moment but I want to try some bulbs that give a more blue light. XM20ks look nice but the PAR is very poor when compared to other bulbs.

Unless you dont mind replacing them every 6 months or so. I would try the 12k reeflux, you would be happy with the growth and color.

You could but you would need some other piece of equipment like a kill-a-watt to be somehow accurate, otherwise you'll be just guessing.
