Protein Skimmer tube question

Should I clean the algae in the tube that leads up to the box that I empty from the protein skimmer, mine is green and has gunk on it? I ask this because I'm not sure if this is what helps bring the bubbles up. On the directions it says takes a week or two for it to work, didn't know if this was because until it is "broken in" that it won't pull up bubbles with gunk attached up. Thanks in advance.

i clean mine about every 2 weeks. just the neck of the skimmer not the body.

it will take a day to get going again, but it improves the performance.
