using a fluval fx5 as a refugium of sorts

Ok all, I know I am going to be accosted for using an FX5 in a reef setup instead of the holy sump but I bought my current setup from a guy that used the tank as a fish only setup. I have discovered that the FX5 is indeed a nitrate factory because my nitrates remain at 15-20 even after H20 changes. My question is: If I took out the nitrate collecting foam and just kept carbon and LR rubble in there would that work because it would essentially be a small sump right? I would really appreciate the input good or bad...

Thanks in advance,

Dustin

Short answer...yes. I had a FX5 running for several months in that set-up...
