If you don't then the skimmer will go nuts on you. I've used the RSR in the past and left my skimmer running (it's in sump I just took the cup off and let it overflow). I also only used about half the recommended dosage, repeated as directed and at the end of the week replaced all my mechanical and chemical media and did a large water change sucking as much of the cyano out as possible. I've read a lot of horror stories from people using it so be careful!

You definitely want to turn off the skimmer -- I tried it a couple of weeks ago and failed to turn mine off, and it overflowed my waste container and had the floor wet within about 30 minutes. Worse, this seemed to have caused the treatment to fail as well.

Tried it again about a week later, turned off the skimmer and left it off for 3 days, and the treatment worked like a champ. There was nothing in the tank but clean-up crew, so I can't speak to the safety of it, but it certainly cleared the cynano up.

When you turn your skimmer back on, stick around and be ready to empty it a few times; I emptied about a gallon and a half (on a 105 gallon tank) in 90 minutes or so before mine calmed down.

Also be sure to remember to shut off any auto-top-off while you're skimming the stuff out and replace the lost skimmate with salt water and not fresh.

Get the biggest airstone you can find because without the skimmer going the oxygen levels in the tank will drop dramatically once you dose.

Yup. Turn the skimmer off.

When you turn it back on, give yourself a good hour or so to pay close attention to the skimmer. I emptied my cup three times before it stopped going crazy.

Good product. Make sure you find the reason behind WHY you got the cyano in the first place (heavy feeding, poor nutrient export, using tapwater, etc) or you may have issues later down the road with it again.
