agree w/thewashcaps - sounds like cyno algea (a.k.a. - red slime algae). Not good stuff. Nothing eats it (effectively). make sure water params are ok, increase the flow if you notice it develops in "dead" areas first. Also, make sure water u r using is clean; that is, if you have an RO, check TDS and Phos - make sure you're not adding food for the slime. clean/vac detrius if you can see piles in corners, etc.(will spike Nitrates) For particularly stubborn outbreaks, I have used red slime remover (can't remember mfg.) - turns the tank pee yellow, but works w/o killing good stuff. You still have to fix root problem tho.

no, I know what cyano is. This is red turf algae, I know what it is, I was just wondering if anyone had a little more info about it. I've had cyano however, a few times.
Anyone have any more info to share? thank you much! |

Ok, here's a link i found to an article that might help. It appears Mexican turbo snails will eat the stuff.

I too have the turf algae in my tank. I let it get to about 40% before I had enough. I posted in the Macroalgae forum and along with Mexican turbos they also suggested sally lightfoots.
I have not tried biological control yet rather I took the opportunity to start dosing carbon in the tank which is making a difference and pulling about 90% of the rock to cook for a few months. I decided a fresh start was in order thus the method I took. The suprising thing was not all of the rocks were covered. I wonder if some of them were leaching PO4 and the algae was using it. Good luck. |

I'm battling it now too. Turbo snails do eat it, but not fast enough
