Need advice please ... cheato

Somehow my cheato is make it's way into the return section of my sump. I just cleaned it off Wednesday and the return pump had more on it last night. I'm afraid it could cause the pump to burn up. Why is this happening and is there a way to correct the problem? Most of my cheato is in a large clump but there is some laying on the bottom of the fuge area. Thanks.

Inevitably, one of the fonds/strands will make it through/over baffles. If you're using baffles, you might try adding coarse screening of some sort over the baffles--something large enough to let water flow through easily but fine enough to keep the strands out. The only other solution I know is to move the Chaeto to a stand-alone fuge. Unless you're getting a lot of strands in the pump, I doubt a few will cause the pump to seize.

I agree with abulgin... while I doubt a few strands are going to harm the pump at all, you'll need to find some way to strain the water if you're really eager to keep it from getting out of its current location.

Gutter guard or eggcrate works well to keep the cheato from entering the next section.

I just wonder whether the gap in the baffles is wide enough for even one row of eggcrate. Probably not.

I always just stacked it vertical, on top of the baffle that seperates the 2 sections.

We have some gutter guard but it's not plastic. So I can't use it correct?
