Just a question but what are you feeding the idol?

i wouldn't put any of the tangs, shark, bat fish, or any large angel....i would also watch the GSM clowns..........

i think the smaller angels, lunar wrasse would be ok..............

basically you want the idol to be the top dog and anything that keeps him from that spot should be removed

i think the 175g would be enough room for the idol

Oh yes he/she will spend at least 8 weeks in a 75g qt...... i set it up this am using live rock from my tanks some dry for a year or more scrubed base rock and i did sprinkle a couple cups of saturate from my tanks on the rocks... also used 25g of tank water and 45g of fresh new saltwater to finish filling the tank

have you had these fish for a while? If so you know their temperament, I'd probably just try to keep the idol with the least aggressive of the ones you've got. I'd want to give it the best chance possible to get acclimated.

i had a moorish idol for a while till i broke down my tank.. he was wonderful. i got him when he was large. so he was able to defend himself.. my biggest eater in my tank...
he ate pellets flakes you name it....
him and my purple got a little fiesty at the beg.. but soon tapered off..

Moorish idols will not last long term in your tank unless you can supply them with the food the eat in nature--live sponges--and alot of them

I have a recollection that I read that the legendary PaulB kept one until a tank "incident" or something...perhaps I am losing it in my old age, but maybe the capn would remember or you could pm PaulB.

Can you provide a little more info on the idol, as in what size is he, and how long has the diverden had him?
To note you don't have to constantly feed him sponge and lots of it, but a varity of diet and a lot of food yes. Now I have one for that past three years, I feed him as well as most of my tank mainly different pellets formul 1 formul 2, NLS medium and large, I feed the tank frozen angel food once a week and nori. My idol is also very large and fat. My guys tanks mates include, large french angel, large emperor, majestic, flagfin, achilles tang, powder blue, singapore angel, blue headed wrasse and a cleaner wrasse adn a couple of clowns. To note at one point I did have gold strip maron clowns in there, I only took them out as they where taking up to much territory, but never bothered the idol. There was a large pacific sailfin tang, he was removed as he was the only fish that did not get a long with the idol. This is just my experience and is not meant to be what is said to work all the time as each fish is different.

well he is either 4 1/4 or 4 1/2 inch ( i dont remeber exactly) i forgot to ask how long they had him but i will see if i can find out...i did find out what foods they were feeding him and its the same as i feed my tanks except the mysis was a diffrent brand but i cannot see wher ther would be a big diffrence in mysis.. besides the flakes, pelets and mysis he is used to i also feed the tank nori and b/f- angel formula frozen, marine entree, and emeral mix and i dont have a particular schedgle on the frozen..just which ever one i grab out of the freezer

iam considering putting him in the angel/tang tank... which has the most rockwork/caves/overhangs and has a prety wide open swimming area as well it also has the maroon clown but she is actually pretty mellow for a gsm clown (no mate..never had one in my tank at least)... the moorish idol is aprox the same size as the purple tang i bought at the same time and if all works out i will introduce both of them to the tank at the same time to reduce/spread out the aggression(after qt)... last check they were at fed x facility an hour away (closet one to me)....

Are these tanks reef tanks with corals? You do know Moorish Idols will eat coals? I have seen this first hand.
