chiller plumbing

Is it ok to tee off the drain pipe to feed my 1/3 chiller? Right now I'm feeding it with a Rio pump and would like to gravity feed instead. Someone said detritus may clog the chiller. Is that true? Thanks.

I answered your other thread, but I would be concerned about something clogging it or just the fact that it may have quite a bit of head loss associated with it. So just the amount of flow capable of flowing through it without a pump may be more of an issue.

I have a 1/3 JBJ chiller and in their setup instructions they recommend against plumbing your chiller with the drain from your tank for that exact reason.

You can but all the air bubbles in the drain line will make it much less effective.

Thanks for the responses. Someone on the other thread recommended teeing off from my return line. That's what I'll do.
