electrical saftey advice

Need advice!

I just moved into my new place, plugged in my light and the powerbar exploded into a small flame! With a huge buzzing sound. Luckily nothing caught on fire. Had it gone for 5 minutes, the whole house would have burned! I think the power bar may have gotten water inside and the salt may have rusted some components. Wow crazy stuff.

Im scared as heck to re-set up my tank now.

Anyone care to step by step how to prevent electrical fire and where to put power bars ect?

Thanks!

First, mount it on the wall near the outlet (to get it off the floor), and second, get a quality power strip. Which one were you using?

its a belkin 10 outlets. Made of metal. Like the dj powerstrips. Funny thing is on the back it says "not for aquarium use or wet enviroments".

Sounds like you should get rid of that power strip.

(I could suggest another one for you, but I won't...on the off chance that I someday move to Winnipeg and open a power strip store. Ya know, I wouldn't want to reveal my secrets and lose a hypothetical customer. )
