What's Wrong With My Mushrooms?

My mushrooms aren't opening fully anymore, they are kind of scrunched up and ugly looking. I have no idea why they are doing this, but if you have any ideas as to why my mushrooms would be doing this. I've had them for about two months and they have never done this and I haven't done anything differently. Could it be because there is too much calcium in the water since I put calcium supplements in?

Are you testing the calcium? What is it at?

I do not know exactly, but I'm guessing they are at the correct level, if not lower. Why would calcium be a problem with mushrooms? Two out of the seven + that are on the rock are doing perfectly fine.
I don't know if it could be because of something my frogspawn is releasing into the water.
I dose the tank every night and/or every other night with 6 drops of Kent Marine Liquid Reactor.

Have you done any water changes? Most supplements always suggest water changes after dosing.

Also, it would be a good idea to get test kits for whatever you are dosing for.

I have had my tank set-up for about 5 years and in that time I have not dosed, just good regular water changes 20% twice a month.

Ihave mushrooms on rocks, under rocks, in between rocks lol mushrooms are one of the hardiest corals there are (IMO) I would say dosing might be an issue if your not testing for what your dosing just my 2cents.

Also just knowing your water parameters would be a big help

Agree with this. Would not dose anything that I was not tracking unless I had a long history of tracking it and a good idea from that data, and even then would test monthly. I also dose nothing and have great results. I do 15% water changes every week.

One thought - is there anything else close to them? Corals will sting each other. Overcrowding could mean they are battling for space via chemistry.

Give us more data about your parameters and tank and we can help more, but I would start with some aggressive water changes to be safe - cant hurt.

Whats your water chemistry? If your nitrates are high this could do it.

I always do a gallon water change every week - this is an 8 gallon tank.

The clown and wrasse are a very high bioload on such a small tank. You need to check your water chemistry, doesn't matter how often you change 1 gal.

Has lighting or water flow changed in any way? Did you replace any light bulbs recently?

I would suggest that you never dose anything if you can't test if the tank needs it.

I'd suggest a large (50%) water change, but be sure the water is the same temp. and salinity. I'd also run carbon.

What are your ph, nitrates, ammonia, nitrites, calcium and alkalinity readings?

Joyce
