Sand cleaning

I have deep sand bed in my sump with some cheato. The tank has been running for about 6 months and everything is great. The question I have is cleaning the sand bed in the sump. I have pods and other life forms on/in the sand/cheato. Basically the sump turns into a toilet and I clean it out every few weeks and rinse the cheato with some clean di/ro water ( boy that really catches the waste)!!!! Is there something I'm missing. Can I place a clean-up crew in the sump w/the deep sand bed? I just hate to watch the pods and such go down the drain with the waste when the water change comes around!!!!

Thanks
Ed

I've read of other people putting a CUC in the sump. Makes sense to me to have critters clean it instead of you.
