Closed loop pump decided to break - Water on the floor

First off, excuse my rambling, I just need to vent a little....

Over the past few weeks I noticed my closed loop pump has been making more noise, and i would have to adjust the stand it was on to quiet it down. Well tonight I was moving it around to figure out what is going on and the return portion of the pump broke!! . The part that sucks is that the ball valve that I had coming from the main intake of the tank was locked shut, and I had a bit of water coming out...Finally after about 5 gallons of water on the floor I was able to shut the valve...Luckily there was no exposed plugs on the ground, and no major damage, other than to my psyche...Needless to say. the mess is now cleaned up, fans running on the stand to help dry out the bottom and my closed loop plumbing, which I did not drill my tank for, is sitting on my back porch.

Man, I use to recommend the Ocean runner pumps, but this is the second time this has happened. First time was on my OR 2500, which was in sump.

I have been contemplating removing the closed loop. I have been thinking lately that the CL is a possible source for major water leak problems and envisioned my water level dropped to the level of my intake, and tonight proved me right only not to the extreme degree.

So whats next? I am thinking of just getting another MJ mod, I already have 2, then deciding what to do. I really do not want to spend the cash on a couple of vortech's, but at the same time I do not want a bunch of MJ mods in my tank. The other advantage to the Vortech's is the batter back up, man 15-24 hours during a power outtage sure is appealing....

What would you guys do?

The iron part is that I was speaking with Brett today about this decision.

Sorry to hear about your situation.

I choose an mp20 vortech for my solana and couldn't be happier. I have short pulse wave mode on during the day and reef crest mode on during the night. It also has a feed mode which slows the pump down for feeding. No more huge koralias in the display, just one pump for everything.

I also can sleep at night knowing that if the power went out while I was sleeping the battery backup would handle the situation for up to 36 hours on half power. The battery should last for 5+ years but when it finally dies you can send it back to icecap and for $39 get it recharged and it should last another 5+ years so basically you have a battery backup forever.

Some people don't like that you can't angle them but you really don't need to. The whole tank stirs up with flow and nothing is sitting stagnant.

hth

Well worth the investment. Plan to have this pump all through graduate school and hopefully longer.

-Matthew

Thanks Matthew,
My biggest concern is the ability to keep everything suspended. I am losing targeted bottom flow now that I have removed the closed loop, and I am hoping more of a wave action would be able to negate my worry. .

Matt-

Just figured I'd chime in and let you know that the MP20 will actually run for more like 3 days + on the battery backup. We've seen as long as 120 hours.

I was wondering if anyone local had a couple of Gen2's sitting around that I could borrow. I would really love to test these things out before I spend a G on them.

I know this is wishful thinking.....But Hey you cannot blame me for trying.

Someone should be able to chime in to let you try them out. I let Keith and Eric try my vortech mp40 wireless out for a couple hours while hanging out.

+1.
pricey but great investment with excellent customer support.
looks clean, not a bunch of wires and gadgets hanging everywhere in tank.
very powerful
now has a "night mode" for lower currents at night
and new Gen2 has lots of different options for wave patterns.
