Octopus Extreme Skimmer Sizing

I am putting together a new system for my new house and I've started to zero in on an Oceanic 120 tank with a custom sump that will hold about 40g. I can't really find any sizing info about the Octo Extremes. I am looking at the 200 and the 250. Any advice? I want to be able to skim it. My current tank is underskimmed and is a pain. I would definately rather overdo it than under.

Thanks,
Reid

I'm new to the Octo/MSX skimmers but I am planning on getting a 200 for my set-up (which is the same as yours) I think the 200 is rated for 225g for average bioload and 175g for high bioload so were both ok with the 200. HTH

It's always been reccommended that you buy a skimmer that is reccommended for larger than your tank, because the manufacturers will usually overshoot with the marketing numbers. I just want to make sure that I overshoot by enough. Could the 250 be dialed back if I need it to?

i have the SWC 200 extreme on my 110, i have the skimmer in a 55 gallon sump, works great for me. personely i would go as big as you can for your sump. mine is very similar to this one.

I definately CAN go with the bigger skimmer, but the question is whether or not the extra $130 would be better spent elsewhere... hmmm.

The 200 would be enough for your setup but I would go with the 250 and use the pin wheels instead of the mesh for a more consistent skim and less maintenance.

How much more maintenance does the mesh wheel add? It must add a lot to the skimmer if it's a pain.

I'm thinking about getting the 250 just for the flexibility factor.

The mesh requires baby sitting. After time the mesh will pull away from the wheel causing extra airpull, possible watt increase and start up issues. It is suggested to replace the mesh every 6 months. I would suggest replacing it every other month and have a kill-a-watt attached to monitor the pump.

I'm thinking I am going to run mesh either way. I don't mind replacing every few months. Does this change the opinion about whether or not it's worth an extra $130 for the 250?\
