Overskiming?
Would an Octopus 3000 skimmer be too much of a skimmer for a 180 gallon system?
Is there really such thing as "over skimming". I mean, how can your water be too clean?

The tank ratings are usually vastly different from the "Actual" ratings. Don't forget to add on your sump's water vol. Mines actually closer to 300gal on a 180. If you're running an SPS system you want it to be as low nutrient as possible. I think you'll be fine. Maybe better than fine.

You can overskim... but it doesn't mean necessarily that it won't work properly. My skimmer is oversized for my tank, which you should do, plus it's overdrived with a big pump. It still skims very well except sometimes the skimmate doesn't get all the way up the neck into the cup. It collects on the neck tower. Gotta clean it all anyway so no biggy. I still have 5-10 ppm Nitrates too. So you won't remove all your waste with just a skimmer. I'm dosing Prodibio now instead of vodka to help with the rest. My system just isn't totally balanced and I have a really small fuge too.

You can't over die. You can't over dry.

I skim a 30 gallon with a Aqua C Remora Pro (rated for 150 gallons) w/ a Mag 5 pump.
Definately over kill but i only run my skimmer for 12 hours a day (sounds obnoxious at night while sleeping) |
