flame angel + lemonpeel angel ..bad news
Hey guys,
I was gone on vacation for 4 weeks and during that time, my brother was babysitting my tank: 120g reef with around 75lbs of LiveRock. During that time, he though it might be a nice "gift" to give me Flame Angel for my birthday. He went to my LFS and proceeded to add a nice and healthy flame angel to my tank. Normally, this wouldn't be a problem, since I always wanted a flame angel. Only problem, is I already have a Lemonpeel Angel (been there for 9 months) now in my tank. He's pretty much the boss of the tank. So when I got back from vacation and my brother informed me of the gift, I wasn't surprised to find the flame angel hiding behind my Tunze pumps. Both the Lemonpeel and Flame Angel are pretty much the same size, with maybe a slighter avantage to the Lemonpeel. I immediately noticed the Lemonpeel was aggressive towards the Flame angel..to the point that the only little space the flame angel can hide is behind the Tunze pumps. I have tried to remove him from the tank, without any success. He looks healthy and eats the food I put in the tank. He swims around the pumps and grazes on the algae. If the Lemonpeel sees him, he scoots over to scare him. What can I do ? I don't want to take town my tank... I was thinking of adding more live rock to help create more hiding places. Any suggestions ? |

You can try adding and/or rearranging your live rock.
I've had good success with partioning off part of the tank with eggcrate and then you only have to remove part of the live rock. You can remove either fish, as one or the other most likely will have to go. Joyce |

i would take out the lemonpeel and put him in a temporary tank for a few weeks till the flame gains some confidence in its new home then add the lemonpeel again, or make an eggcrate divider for your tank and separate the two for a few weeks

Try the mirror trick. Place a mirror on the side of the tank and if your lucky it will ditract the lemonpeel.

Give it some time. Try the above to be safe, but I had the same issue with a Potter's and argi added to a 30 at the same time. They chased each other around at first to establish dominance, but now don't bother each other. They mostly stick to themselves, but will not fight in close quarters.

My Lemonpeel attacks pretty much any fish..except for the Flasher Wrasse..he's too quick for him.
Earlier today, the flame angel summoned courage to go "see" the lemonpeel. I witnessed a vicious attack of the Lemonpeel. They have been doing this pretty much all day. I placed a mirror..but don't think it will help much. I'm hoping with time the attacks will become less frequent. |

I find that most aggression in the early stages of adding a new fish is always strongest during feeding. For example I added my 6 line wrasse about 4 months ago and he was constantly chased by my flame hawk. it calmed down, but during feeding the hawk would chase the 6 line because he wanted the food to himself. Hopefully your fish will calm down. Try rearranging the rock if you cant catch either of them. Thats what I would do.
Good luck

I kept lemonpeel and flame in a 40g breeder no problem. If anything the lemonpeel was more shy.
I added them both at the same time though. |

Try moving the lemonpeel to another tank for 2-3wks, rearrange the rock work in your DT, then reintroduce the lemonpeel.
