Multi-vapor lamps
Hey guys,
I know these arent really used much anymore, but Im trying to set up a reef tank in a biology lab at my university, and I found two 400 watt multi-vapor fixtures with 10K multi-vapor bulbs in them sitting around the lab. I put one over the tank and the light is an intense white. My question is: can I use these lights on a reef tank? I cant find a spectral analysis of them on the internet so I dont know if its safe or not. Im assuming that these lights were originally purchased to be used on a reef aquarium MANY years before I came along. What do you think? Anyone used these before? Thanks!! -Matt

Multi-Vapor is a registered name by General Electric for quartz metal halide bulbs. It is basically a standard metal halide bulb for commercial use. Depending on the model the light color is at or below 4000K. Multi-Vapor bulbs use the same ballast as many other metal halide bulbs. You can use any metal halide bulb that is built to the same standard (ANSI code). Most common ANSI code for 400-watt metal halide is M59.
