Soft or hard water for RO/DI

I need to move the location of my ro/di I use for my tanks. I have been using water that has been "softened" by my water softener. The new location will be using water that has not been through the water softener. Will this make a difference? Should I try to run a new water line to get softened water?

Thanks.

may shorten the life of your cartridges with the hard water.

Use the soft water if you can. Manufacturers recommend it and membranes love it.

It will make your filter and membrane collect a little more
It really depends on how bad the water is.
Do you have a tds meter ?
Check and see if it is worth the trouble

It shouldn't be too hard to run another line with softened water. Thanks for the replies.

I agree with all the above. If you have a softener on the premises It would be beneficial to get soft water to the RO/DI unit, but it's not absolutely necessary.

Here's a fun fact to know and tell. Do you know what's in a water softener? Its a type of ion exchange resin - like the DI resin you are used to. The resin in the softener is not "mixed bed" resin - just cation resin.

Yes - supply softened water to the membrane if you can.
