Help--skimmer question-Octopus Pro 300

I just bought an Octopus Pro 300 skimmer.

After hooking it all up in my sump...

if the pump intake is up against the glass (ie, partially blocked), then it gets some bubbles, but not enough to skim.

if the pump intake is away from the glass (ie, unblocked, no obstruction---like you would think it is supposed to be), then almost no bubbles at all are created.

if the pump is away from the glass, and I put my hand down to block the pump intake for a moment, then pull it away, the bubbles go into overdrive. Even after removing my hand (ie, unblocking the intake completely), the skimmer begins to overflow in under 3 seconds.

In all three cases above, the output tube is fully open, however in the second case where there are almost no bubbles, there are still no bubbles no matter what position the output tube is in. As I close the output, it begins to overflow.

Any suggestions? I heard this was a great skimmer. Somewhat disappointed so far. Also, no manual came with it.

Pat~

Water level is about 12 inches high.

Is that too high? Do I need to put something under the skimmer to make it higher up?

Tried it with the following results:

12" deep: Overflows with output wide open.
10" deep: Overflows with output wide open
8" deep: Does'nt overflow when wide open, but doesn't skim either. As it is adjusted, it goes instantly from no skim, to overflow.
6" deep: Same as 8" deep.

It's been sitting at 6 inches for about 5 hours. It's laughing at me (no skimmate).

Do the Octopus Pro 300's suck or did i get a lemon?

I mean seriously, the Coralife skimmer i bought this to replace at least skimmed a little bit.
