Refugium

I currently have a 180 gallon fish with live rock setup and purchased a refugium rated for a 200 gallon aquarium. The refugium has 3 sock filters that filters before the water moves to my live rock/live sand and then to the return section. Question is how effective are the sock filters? Is there a better way to filter? Can the socks be removed and replaced with something better? Any help is greatly appreciated.

I like filter socks, just need to keep them clean and they work great. If not maintained they can cause nitrate problems

the filter socks actually help your protein skimmer perform better.

I just can't picture the need for three of them---how many drain lines do you have
Can you possibly post a picture of your sump?
