Who runs Chaeto & Phosban
I have heard it is not a good idea to run phosban and keep Chaeto in a fudge. Anyone do this and if no why?
Thanks in advance Dan

I just saw a thread recently talking about this.
I personnaly run GFO and run chaeto in a refugium. My chaeto still gets decent growth (the volume of chaeto doubles every three weeks or so). For a while the light in my sump burned out and I pulled the chaeto out of my refugium and stuck it in a bucket in a window for a few weeks until I got around to buying a new light fixture for my sump. In the mean time, the algae in my display started to get out of control - even while I was stull running GFO. As soon as I got around to installing the light in my sump and added the chaeto back to the system, the algae disapeared almost over night. |

I dont think it has anything to do with "is it bad to run them together"
I run GFO and have Cheato but my cheato is not growing and is actualy starting to die a bit because the GFO is removing what the Cheato is eating. I think if you want your cheato to thrive you need to run very little GFO or not run it 24/7 because eventualy the cheato will starve ... this is as far as I understand and have seen from my own sysytem.

Interesting. I am not so worried about chaeto growth as I am with algee in my DT. I am starting to get som HA and I think it is from some bad live rock i bought for my tank upgrade. I think they are leeaching PO4? So want to use GFO and the Chaeto to help reduce it?

I run both, just turn my phosban reactor down some and the cheato grows better. I still have most of the algae I had before adding both but it hasnt spread and it has only been a few weeks since I added them. Damn hair algae! BTW, I get almost no film algae on the glass, some hard calcium type stuff but not the slimy kind that needs daily cleaning.

Interesting. Never had any problem with running the 2 together. I run GFO in a reactor and have for some time. I've had cheato in my sump for years and have to take 1/2 out every two to three weeks. The stuff gorws like crazy. Once I changed my bulb to Melves method, the growth exploded. I've never noticed any problems on my end with have GFO running with cheato. I also run purigen and carbon form time to time.

I run both, cheato still grows just fine & doubles in size about every 3 weeks. My maidens hair colonie actually halted most of it's growth after adding gfo, slowest grower I have right now.

If you have fish and/or feed on a regular basis shouldn't be much of a problem. you are still adding phophates to be consumed. If you arent feeding very often or maintain very low nutrients could pose a problem.
