powder blue tang and ich prevention ????
I have just bought myself a powder blue tang and added it to my
130Gal mixed reef tank. I realise now that I have made a huge mistake by adding this fish without placing it in QT. Has anybody had any FIRST HAND experience with these fish and tips on how to prevent the on set of Ich. I conduct weekly water changes and keep Alkalinity, PH and temperature consistent. I am also providing a constant supply of Nori and Zucchini during the day. Any tips on what else may help? what are your experiences? Thanks fellow Reefers |

lots of hiding places. Have a few cleaner shrimp on hand. Feed Spectrum thera A+. If your adding after having several other fish, they may pick on it, that won't help at all. Only will add stress and ick will set in. Good luck, they are a beautiful fish.

I have experience with an Achille's Tang, which is on par with the PBT as being delicate and ich prone. Unfortunately both are fish that really need a QT period to rid it of ich. At this point it is not "if" it will get ich, it is when it will show up. At that point you will need to pull it out of the display and put in a hospital tank for treatment (hyposalinity or copper), along with any other fish that are infected, and leave the display without fish for 6-8 weeks. As for the cleaner shrimp, there have been studies that show they are not effective against ridding a fish of a parasite. In fact, when the contents of their stomachs were looked at, there were no traces of parasites that they "cleaned" from the fish. Cleaners removes dead tissue from your fish.
Sorry to be negative, maybe you will luck out and not need to deal with ich. Good luck with your PBT.

The biggest thing with fish like that, is that you need to understand that the fish WILL get sick at some point or another, and prepare yourself accordingly.
I have a PBT that went through black ich in QT, the regular ich in the display tank, but I was prepared for it... so it was no big deal. IMO if you add a healthy specimen you'll be fine. Feel free to shoot me a PM if you want to know anything specific. Good luck. PBT's are spectacular looking fish.

Did you buy a sick fish? Did it get sick in the best environment you can provide? Are all fish sick, one way or the other?

you wont see near as many post about it for the powder blue compared to the achillies but they like a good amount of flow as well ..my powder blue spens a good amount of time playing in the flow from a korollia #4 and personally i think the added flow helps with keeping the fish healthy and happy, i have no sienctific data to back that up jts just a personal opinion

I fed him a half sheet of seaweed that was soaked in garlic daily and then he also ate some flake foods 2-3 times a day when I fed the clowns and damsels. It took around a month but he got over it without any medication and I found that the more I fed him the faster he seemed to recover. |

Some people feel that QT is the way to go. I can't say a disagree but I can't be bothered with it. When I set up my 75 gallon tank over 4 years ago I QT'd all my fish. I almost lost a few fish in QT because it is real hard to keep the water quality as good in a QT as you can in your main tank. Also keep in mind if you are going to QT you need to QT everything that goes in tank. That includes corals, inverts, rock, I mean everything. Ich can be on anything you put in your tank. I now have a 300 and my 75. The fish in my 300 seem to always show little signs of ich (mostly the hippo) but nothing full blown. I recently added an asfur angel, pygmy angel and a purple tang to the 300. The purple tang had spots all over him. I feed him a great deal of seaweed soaked in vitamin c and so far so good. I wish you luck and enjoy the hobby.

Sunday I added a lemonpeel angel, coral beauty, mandarin, some type of blenny/goby, and a pajama cardinal to my 75.
I got these, a clown, a yellow tang, and a blue tang from a guy for $30. I gave my friend the blue tang, the yellow, and the clown. I have had a yellow tang for over a year now and after I added the new fish to the tank, it looks like the yellow tang has some sort of ich. His tail and side fins mostly. Not much on his body. It also looks like something tried to grab him by the tail. What is the best reef safe treatment? Or should I just feed and hope for the best? I just took out my UV 3 days ago to change the bulb. Could this be a problem, or should I hook it back up? Thanks

To give you my opinion no reef safe treatments work they are a big waste of money. Feed good food and use seaweed soaked in garlic and vitmain c. Hopefully the fish will be strong enough to fight it off.

How do I soak seaweed in garlic and vitamin c?
I feed omnivore frozen cubes daily with seaweed. I have not fed seaweed sheets for a while.

I have found that frozen Formula 2 (thawed and mushed up very well with a fork) seems to boost my fish' immune system and enhance coloration. They also love the stuff... even my Clown and jawfish!
