I have not tried it but IMO I would stay away from this unit for several reasons.

1) Although just personal preference I like ALL clear canisters. This unit only has one.
2) Stage 1: OK for starters but would like to see either this as a lower micron filter OR followed by the next stage with a lower micron filter.
3) Stage 2: Don't like at all. GAC has a tendency to release carbon fines that can clog (reduce effeciency) of stages that follow it. IF GAC is run then you "should" run another fine mic sediment filter AFTER the GAC - this unit doesn't do that.
4) Stage 3: OK - but there are better carbon blocks to be had.
5) Stage 4: Fine
6) Stage 5: Housing is not big enough and sits horizontal. This can possibly cause channelling within the media. Better option is a full sized housing with DI.
7) Stage 6: Useless in reef applications. Simply more GAC than can release fines into the water. IF you are going to use this for your aquarium then simply remove this stage.

Once again - this is only my opinion.

In general, RO/DI units are made basically the same.
Two things to look for and what makes one better than the other is durability of the housing (there are definately some cheap jap housings on some of these units that should be avoided), and the filters that the unit comes with.

Stay away from the horizontal housings (other than the membrane itself).

Personally I think you would be better off going with one of the name brands. Yes, it will cost you a bit more but you'll be starting off with better filters in a better combination.

And lastly - A free plug for my personal favorite.

Call up Russ from Buckeye Field Supply (An RC sponsor). A great guy to deal with and he won't sell you anything you don't need.
