UV v Micro Filtration

Tom
I just finished reading the February article on Natural Filtration (I know I'm a slow reader - but a quick learner ). You mentioned micro filtration as being more effective (or quicker) to kill of bacteria. I am planning on a 10 gallon QT tank in my new setup, would you recommend a UV sterilizer or a micro filter on a closed loop? Wouldn't the micro filter clog up quickly with gunk and therefore reducing its efficiency?
Thanks

Hi Alan,

The two main points that micro filtration has over UV is it processes far more water in a shorter time than UV and the equipment is cheaper. True, the filter clog but they can be cleaned using a bleach soak (see the instructions with the filter regarding the strength-usually 3 parts water to 1 of bleach) and reused dozens of times.

So for a QT tank where the fish stays for about 4 weeks would you recommend UV or MF (ignoring cost for the time being)?
Thanks

I'd go with the MF as it also provides good flow in a Q-tank.

Okay thanks (and can I ignore the 'Bogus Information' part of Bogus Information Expert in this regard)?

You had fair Warning!!!

Actually, I mislead new reefkeepers then buy up their used equipment, for next to nothing, when they leave the hobby.

Yup, you'll need to talk to an Admin and I bribed all of them years ago.
