I leave all my rocks in the tank if I have to reorganize.

not really, do yourself a favor and keep a tub of extra water and swish the rocks around a little to get some of the detrius off. You'd be surprised how much will accumulate on the rocks after time. Just don't keep the rock out of the water for too long
