What type of Algae is this?

after my diatoms died out, this took over. Dont think its hair. weird thing is this was just a transfer from a smaller to bigger tank. Other then adding new sand and some new baserock that was all i added. My old tank has never had any kind of Algae problem. Just moved my tang over today, hopefully he will start cleaning.

any ideas???? i hope this just doesn't stick around.

Looks like bryopsis to me The best way to get rid of it is to get your magnesium levels >1400ppm and keep it up there.

Nothing "causes" different algaes to come and go. It's likely always been in your tank and recently the conditions were favorable to help this one in particular grow more than the other.

IME (I've had bryopsis a few times), raising magnesium is the best way to get rid of it. I use a combination of MAGflake (magnesium chloride, sold as a de-icer in the winter) and Epsom salt (magnesium sulfate). You can also buy magnesium supplements at the LFS like Kent's Tech-M. Get a good magnesium test kit, like Salifert or Elos, to track your levels. Get 'em up and keep 'em up.

This site can help you figure out how much to add to get your desired levels:

i do have epson salt, but not mag flake. cant you just use epson salt? once the magnesium is raised, how long does it take to see effects? I guess i shouldnt have any problem with calcium then.
