Pink Pom Pom Xenia

Hi Guys,

I just got some pink pom pom xenia frags for my tank. My tank is a 20 gallon high tank, and I have 55 watts of compact fluorescent lighting over it. These frags came unmounted, and I placed them in the bottom of my tank in some little "cups" with live rock rubble for them to mount on to. I put the frags in little holes and such in the live rock rubble so that they stay put until they mount. Just wondering; do you guys think that it should do fine in my tank, and about how long should it take for it to mount onto the rock so I can place it where I want in my tank. Oh and my water parameters are 0 amm, 0 nitrite, ~3 nitrate, and about 79 degree water.

Thanks!

They should attach with in a week. Then just move where ever. Xenia does grow fast and can be invasive so many people like to keep it on an island in the sand to avoid having a xenia tank.

There is nothing about your tank you have posted to make me believe xenia could not thrive in it.

I've had my xenia attach to rock as little as two days. Matter of fact, I'll routinely snip off stalks and toss them in my fuge where I've got some live rock rubble and relatively little flow.

Hi, I have used super glue to glue the xenia to a piece of rubble then put it where I wanted it with no ill effects to the xenia.

This pulsing coral is especially invasive. I added some frags to my tank 2 years ago and it grew like cancer. Every weekend I had to spend 2 hours fragging this stuff...I hated it.

A month and half ago I traded some live rock with a lot of pink creeping Xenia to my LFS and re-aquascaped. I then fragged as much of the remaining Xenia I could. I then dropped one fluke tab into the fuge and within minutes you could see the Xenia start to die off. Within a week it was all but a bad memory and the tank no worse for the wear.

For some this is a great coral but for me it turned into a nightmare. Thank God for fluke tabs is all I can say.

Well, I just checked, and a few pieces that have only been on about 1.5 days already attached to the rock!! I thought that was super fast! Also, do I have to add iodine to my tank to keep the xenia healthy? If it is not needed, I would rather not, as I have never dosed anything in my tank.. Not sure if the iodine would hurt anything in my tank; skunk cleaner shrimp, 2 blue chromis, 6 line wrasse, clownfish..?

Dont add iodine. There is enough trace in your salt mix for it to thrive.

If you do your regular water changes you will be fine. Dont dose anything that you cant test for.

I placed my xenia next to the back wall and now have a pulsing wall! They are low demand, high thrive corals.
