Hello from Genoa - Italy

Ciao,
this is my first message in yours forum, and so, excuse me for my bad English.
First of all I make you my compliments for the splendid forum that managed. For sure one of the bests in absolute.
I write from Italy, and I've an aquarium Elos 160x60x60 cm, with light 2x400W HQI + 4x54W T5 attinic.
During these last months, I have had a problem with a propagation of Idrozooi (in Italian, I don't know to write it in English) on rocks. Here in Italy nobody knows how to fighting these little flowers so I ask your aid.
I try to enclose a photography of these "Idrozooi".
The parameters of my tank are:
Temp= 26°c
NO2=0
NO3=0
PO4=0
MG=1250 / 1300
CA=410
KH=8

I hope that you can help me.
Ciao Ciao

I don't know what Idrozooi is unfortunately. sounds like it might be Apstasia. A pic would certainly help.

Oh and.....

thank you for reply.
Tomorrow I'll try with photobucket, because these "idrozooi" are very strong to die.
I am very pleased to be able to change my point of view with you who live so far away.
Thanks to Internet who allows us to share our hobby...
For the moment... good night (or day for you)

Welcome to Reef central. You are in a beautiful area. I had the opportunity to go to Easter Mass in Milan and then spend a few days in the cinco terra, very bella.

They look like zoas to me too. That is a valued coral in my opinion. Are you trying to get rid of it, or make it grow more?

Hello friends,
I've take out an account on www.photobucket.com
You can see the photographies to this address:
http://s431.photobucket.com/albums/qq37/GreatGenoa/

Unfortunately I don't think they are zoas, because they are very small. In my tank I have one Zebrasoma Flavescens, one Paracanthurus hepatus, one Zebrasoma Xanturum, two Lysmata Wundermanni, two Lysmata Amboinensis, two Lysmata Debelius, two mitrax, but nobody eats these idrozooi

I see that some of you know Italy... very well.

Welcome to the forum. Why do you want to get rid of these polyps? Are they taking over your tank? BTW, your English is excellent...

i went to genoa for a few weeks about 6 or 7 years ago, beautiful. I think someone mentioned the cinco terra trail, i walked along that too! what a great place.

looks like a type of star polyp to me too, the only reason I would imagine you wouldn't like them in your tank is because they're taking over a lot of space and spreading??

Definitley not star polyps (clavularia sp) - the polyps length is too short. Looks more like organ pipe coral (Tubipora sp). For those of you with Borneman's coral book, check out page 120.

I agree with the above, that these are a welcomed guest in my tank. I have some living with some of the larger clove polyps they resemble, and seem to do no harm to anything next to them.

Are they causing you problems in your tank?

yes, they are taking over my tank....

capn_hylinur
Unfortunately is not anthelia. It's very very small and it is diffused to carpet.

EvMiBo
Thank you for your comments on Genova, but one question: what is cinco terra trail?

Haksar
sorry for my english, but... I don't understand your question...

Sugar Magnolia
I have found the coral you type on http://www.arkive.org/organ-pipe-cor...?offset=-432px
It is possible.... the polyps resemble a lot.

My problem is that these polyps are invasive and ugly to see.

Unfortunately during these days I have a new problem in my tank with "Dinoflagellati". As soon as possible I will add some photo.

Saluti a tutti from Genova

ciao, ciao! :welcome:
---idrozooi would be 'hydroids', perhaps? Italian doesn't have an initial 'h'.
I understand Italian better than I speak it.
Sounds like a great tank.
I don't actually think they are hydroids: (little jellyfish that look like stars) Those usually show up on the glass and are transparent.
There are zoanthids (zoas), luttle button polyps.
And just plain polyps, such as green star polyps, which glow green under actinic lihgt.
These are something I've seen, are not any of the above, but I cannot name them.
Best advice: move any rock they grow on away from other rocks, even if you have to rebuild your rock structure.
I have some green star polyp I set in a corner, and it has now overgrown the glass as a green wall...

Ciao Sk8r,
the problem is that I don't understand what is really this little flowers, and here in italy nobody knows too.
I also have bought a Dolabella, hoping that he ate them but... nothing
It would seem that they have not natural enemies.

I think that I will throw of acid in my tank........ ;-)

The trail (i may have mispelled it) is a hiking trail along the coast. I forget how long it actually is, but we only did a fraction of it. Really nice views all along it of the water and towns.

Ok, I have understood now.
In Italy there are many walks thus.
Also near Genoa there is a much beautiful one, all on the sea.
