Traveling With Frags

Does anyone have any experience traveling with frags as far as airline travel. I'm going out of town next week and might bring one back if I find something good.

Checked baggage...

Of course you'll have to check it... bummer.

You might try one of those non-glass thermos containers if its not a huge frag. Then enclose that in a larger ZipLoc bag, cushioned real well with your clothing, etc.

No telling what TSA would do if they decided to inspect your bag. I would suggest that you attach a note to the baggie explaining the contents with a receipt for its purchase.

maybe contact the TSA somehow and see what they say about it.

or you could hide it in...your....um....cavity.

I think I'd make the phone call though :P

What did the customs officer say when you brought the frag back. Did you have to declare it?

If I have to check it it's out of the question I guess. I don't want 50$ of sea life smashed in to my work clothes. I've watched those baggage handlers before, they can be pretty rough. I don't think I'm gonna check a bag anyways. My luggage usually ends up on the opposite end of the country that I am.

if you find something you just have to have, ask the seller to ship it to your house.

I know there's got to be another fish aficionado on this forum that has traveled with a frag on an airplane.

I flew back from Chicago a few years ago with a couple of frags. I went to a local Target and purchased two Coleman 1/2 gallon Jugs. The LFS there filled the bag with extra water to keep the frag submerged and added oxygen to the air space. I marked on the jugs what they were and put them in my check baggage. I also put my cell number on the jugs in case they wanted to call me. I did not recieve a call but my bag was inspected by TSA. they arrived fine and still living in the 75 gallon tank.

Lunch pail?

I gotta know...

How does anybody carry a frag on an aircraft and get past the 3 ounce liquid or gel rule? Imagine putting a frag in one of those quart-sized ziploc baggies with all your toothpaste, shaving gel, etc.

If it's liquid in excess of 3 ounces, it stays at the security check in.

You can't even bring liquids that were purchased in the airport past security...

Has all that changed since I flew on September 30?

LL

This looks like the way to do it (hence my non-glass thermos suggestion earlier). Well planned.

I just flew back from Florida. You cannot take a liquid more than three ounces past security. If they are in doubt of what you have expect it to go in a dispose bin. Better to check them than try to carry on if you want to keep them.

I asked the crew at wetwebmedia and they suggested damp packing the coral and carrying it on like that. Which seems pretty reasonable and gets around the 3oz rule.

The 3-1-1 rule may get them tossed, You will have to put then in a baggy and run them through the x-ray machine. Even with documentation if they do not know what it is its tossed. I work in Bio-Terrorism and they may not care that you spent a lot on the corals and still toss them. If you dont declare them and get caught with them you may spend some time in that "special room"
