Hippo Tang Opinions
i just got rid of my sailfin tang because he was quickly out growing my tank. i would like to get a hippo tang instead now. what are your personal opinions about them? peop;e have told me that they do not do well and are ich prone. do you agree or dissagree? all my water is fine and all my fish are peaceful. Also if you recomend a hippo, what size should i get and any special care needed for it? thanks

Probably grow even quicker than the sailfin. I got rid of mine out of 150 for the same reason. These fish will grow to 14" in the wild, probably a bit large if it's going in the 96 bowfront you list in your signature.

Liveaquaria lists the yellow and hippo tangs as easy to care for. My yellow tang survived an ick outbreak. I would like to put a hippo in my tank but haven't because it is a tang and everything I have read said they are all ick prone. I set up a quarantine tank and plan to put any tangs I get in there for 1-2 months before going in my main tank.

I have 3, one is going on 13.5 years old. Feed them well and ick will not hurt them, if they are healthy any fish can get over ick. Ick is not the end of the world.

I have a Hippo in my 125g tank for 2 years now. They are pron to Ick, and mine has had it a few time. I now soak my food in garlic and I haven't seen Ick on any of my tangs for over a year. However garlic won't git rid of Ick, it will only help the fish fight it off.
In the 2 years I have had my Hippo, it has only grown about 1-1/2". I only feed once per day. |

i have a hippo in my current tank for 1 year now, great fish!
my advice is they will get ick when they are stressed ( from other fish, from you or the water quality). just make sure they wont get stressed and they do fine. if in a healthy environment the hippo will recover in 2 - 3 days. my other fish never got ick from the hippo. get it as a baby. will be less shy and grows fast, large hippos seems to be more shy and get ick more frequent... my was from 1/2 ich to 1 and a 1/2 in less than a year from feeding once a day. |

Mine was hyper as heck constantly racing from one end of tank to the other. And this was in my 180.
When I stepped up to my 300 gal I removed him and found him another home bacause I felt such a high strung fish needed more swimming room than I could provide. Brett
