RO bottled water?

is it possible to use bottled water for freshwater changes? When the water evaporates and the salinity rises, i was going to add fresh water to balance it out. would RO bottled water be okay for this procedure?

my first thought is that it should be fine for top off. do make sure it is in fact RO water. in the long run, however, it would be cheaper and likely more practical to get a good RO/DI unit of your own.

You might consider bottled distilled too but machine RO is usually far better than tap. Just make sure the machine is maintained.

I'm confused...???

You said freshwater changes.....???

Are you saying water top offs.....Or water changes ?

If your talking about water top off, Its the best to use RO/DI water. If you cant get the RO/DI water, then go to Walmart or a store & get distilled water. A quart of botteled is about $1.50 . You can get a gallon of distilled water from Walmart for less then a dollar.

I have used distilled water in 2.5g jugs from Meijer (Wal-Mart wannabe) for 18 months and have had no problems.

Distilled is slightly purer than RO but really not enough to make a major difference.

Hey look around. Many times you can get RO water in larger quantities if you have containers. The Wallyworld in my town has a Culligan RO water machine for $0.33 a gallon and sells 5 gallon reusable containers. The Petco down the road sells RO water behind the counter for $0.07 a gallon, you supply the container. When I started out in saltwater, Petco (whom I almost never purchased anything from) would even sometimes give me the RO water for free because it was so much hassle to ring up a $0.70 purchase.

i have another RO/DI bottled water question:

the RO/DI water that is sold at home depot and such that comes in 5 gallon bottles has minerals (sodium bicarbonate and sodium sulfate) added to it for flavor.

is it safe to use in my reef tank, as either top-off or to mix with salt for water changes?

TIA

It doesn't really hurt anything as the amount is small but I'd still consider using a mineral free distilled as those minerals do build up when using it to top off evaporation losses.
