If you want tiny just hatch your own there easy to hatch but hard to raise.

new angelfish. looks at stuff, but won't eat anything. just want to try something live.

i've never tried to grow any, nor have the parts and eggs to do so.

An air pump, air stone, a mix of full strength water with some fresh Ro, a bright light bulb, and let it sit overnight. (use the water recipe from the video, it's super easy - and it's not sterile)

I have a CAN of egg if you are in GB I'll give you 2 shot glasses worth, that enough for live 10 batches. it's supper easy to do. Last time I made it for the food mix at Fred's though I found that since I haven't used an air pump since I had a freshwater tank, all my pumps were crap. I had to rig up my air compressor to run an air stone. It ran every 12 minutes for 24 hours.

I've had the best luck hatching them in big 1 gallon glass jars with turbulent air flow. You just want the eggs to stay suspended.

You can also use a 2 liter soda bottle. Your handy, you can build one of these in your sleep...

I've never tried to grow them past the baby brine stage. Since I usually get them at Craig's place in Appleton when I'm there... for like 3-4$ a portion, you get adults live... usually... haven't shopped for anything fish in nearly 18 months now. Apparently, the eggs stay viable in nature in salt deposits that have been dried up and baking in the sun for years...


Offer stands... eggs stay good for years if stored right. I bought the HUGE can a few years ago, then I was worried that they'd be dead 3 years later when I made the super batch for Fred's food meet last year, but I got like 80% hatch rate. Then there is a bit of a trick to separating them and condensing them, but it's ok.

You just shut the flow off, wait for them to congregate because of the light, then siphon them off. Dump the cruddy water, then repeat until you get them condensed to your liking.

You have my number. (or had) I don't know if I'll be here all day tomorrow as I'm going out to the school, but you should contact me early if your going to take me up on it, I'll bag the eggs and leave them with my wife...

Also, do a search, there were a number of "appetite enhancers for finicky fish that won't eat"

I watched the video and it does appear to be quite easy to do. Getting up to GB tomorrow is another story though. I've pushed my luck with fish related activities the last few weekends and my wife declared tomorrow time for her to do stuff.

I'll try searching for the appetite enhancers. I posted a thread regarding this in the fish forum and tried a few of the suggestions with no luck so far.

I would at least go out of your way tomorrow to wing in and get 3.99 worth of adults and a pack of eggs from craig. Then you can try immediately, and quick throw an air stone in a batch of brackish water and just dump the eggs. The key is lots of turbulence, and a bright desk lamp.. like 20-50 W, but don't cook the water. and be patient. you will bot see success with your naked eye for 22-28 hours. otherwis it just looks like a failure until you stop the water and let it rest, then carefully look to see their teeennny bodies.


If you buy eggs, you don't have to use them, they'll keep for a while... and don't add to many more per the water batch size, it won't help the hatch rate...

how big are the adults?

I'll have to pop over there tomorrow or do like bri says and see if one of those places have them. I checked the chain stores websites and they don't list the eggs, but i'm not sure how much their online vs B&M match up.

A little over 1/8" I would say maybe 3/32".
Not very much nutritional value in them really though. If you do get some portions of live brine add some selcon to the water you are keeping them in for some vitamin enrichment.

No kidding on the things we'll do. are you going to start up an aiptasia tank to grow your own? i'd think you could produce a pretty steady amount once you got it going.

Some good info here, thanks. I was just thinking about doing this myself. Little did I know that the adults weren't very good for nutrition by them selves. I think I am going to give this a shot. I'll post up when I get the supplies and make a hatchery.

ya, I heard they have about the nutritional equivalent to popcorn.

But if you feed frozen mysis shrimp while feeding live brine, they might chase the frozen mysis in the current along with the live.

I like their idea in the fish forum, put a LR in there with pods and sponges on it and it will pick what it wants to eat.

I tried the live rock thing and he hasn't picked at that i've seen. i've also grabbed some of the sponges i've got growing around in my tank and tied them to a rock. no go with that either. maybe i'm just going to get a non-eater.

I've got my brine shrimp eggs stewing now. hopefully i'll have some hatched by after work tomorrow.

Pine street pets sells live adult brine. Closer to you, Aquatic Imports may also but he is only open like fri., sat., and sun. I think.

If anyone runs across the directions of how to grow the baby brine to adults easily, I'd be interested. It can't be that difficult, I just don't want to deal with a long drawn out process. I'm sure that it could be done easily on a mass scale, but for small quantities is a PITA.
