Wow! How do you keep your sand so clean in the reef tank?

Both tanks have metal halide, 10k on fresh and 14k on salt.

The sand stays clean because my pistol shrimp and I fight a constant battle, he piles it up and I even it out about once a week so it gets moved around a lot.

I used to have crushed coral with undergravel filter plates but thousands of red planaria convinced me to switch to aragonite sugar sand

Freshwater has been up for 15 years and the saltwater has been going for about a year.

The Fluval3 in the salt does not have sponge in it it has 300 micron bag full of carbon I change it about every two weeks. I do not dose or test anything I have no sump. I clean the skimmer cup at least once a week. I use reef crystals. Every once in a while I have the LFS test the salt water it is always fine. I use RO/DI that I buy at the LFS only no tap water goes in the saltwater.

The freshwater gets water right out of the tap I treat it with Tetra chlorine remover.

I know the thread is pretty loaded up with pics and slow to load but I wanted to also post a few pics of my stock tank.

I raise crypt wendtii in it and I also use it to quarantine my feeder guppies and goldfish that I feed to the ctenopoma and juruense. Sometimes I feed the GSM a guppy also he loves them.

Very entertaining. I think you need a black background on that first tank.

I do not do backgrounds, I just do not like them... I also keep the rock away from the glass so I can easily use a razor blade to scrape all the glass.

Had a yellow goby that I bought with the shrimp they were already paired.

The goby jumped out after a couple months so I am not getting another.

I'm intrigued that you can do a mixed tank 'on a budget'. Aren't those lights really expensive and need to be replaced every 6mo? Is it just a sump with live rock and a skimmer for filtration?

I think the Koralia has a lot of bubbles because I just installed it (new out of the box) the day before.

Yes the light is $280 and bulbs are $60. The skimmer was also kinda expensive. There is no sump that is why the heater and skimmer and Fluval3 with carbon are all in the tank itself.
