* phosban reactor
* kalc
* co2 dosing
* uv sterilizer
* other equipment

what i'm looking for is an explation of what each does & why it is needed &/or beneficial on a saltwater setup......

- phos reactor: cylinder shaped reactor that holds phosphate removing granules. (Granular Ferric Oxide, GFO) This reduces the phosphates in the water column so that nuisance algae has less to feed on.

- Kalk: an additive, not a piece of equipment. You can use a Kalk Reactor with Kalk, but many just add it to their top off water. Kalk provides Calcium and Alkalinity to your tank to aide in calcification of corals.

- UV Sterilizer: Cylinder shape with an UltraViolet light in the middle. Display tank water is pumped slowly through the cylinder while the uv light kills of harmful (and some beneficial) bacteria and pathogens.

- co2: Usually used in conjunction with a Calcium Reactor. (different than a kalk reactor) Also used however to add calcium to your water column to aide in calcification (growth) of corals.

Hope that helps, keep researching!

I'd skip the sterilizer unless you have a real reason to have one (uncontrollable ich/algae/ghosty problems.) I'm afraid, personally, they'd do in things I want...but I've never used one.

Kalk---wonderful, if you keep hard corals. You just drop 2 tsp a gallon of plain pickling lime powder (Mrs wages) into your ro/di topoff reservoir: see: ATO (automatic topoff): and it sustains your alk and cal at the level you dosed to attain. Pretty safe. I've never lost anything due to kalk overdose, though i have overdosed.

Co2---it drives a calcium reactor---which is the same use as a kalk reactor, but for tanks over 100g, usually.

Salinity 1.024-6; alkalinity 8.3-9.3 on KH scale; calcium 420; magnesium 1300, temp 78-80, nitrate .2. Ammonia 0. No filters: lps tank. Alk and cal won't rise if mg is low.

Current Tank Info: 105g AquaVim wedge, yellow tang, sailfin blenny,royal gramma, ocellaris clown pair, yellow watchman, 100 microceriths, 25 tiny hermits, a 4" conch, 1" nassarius, recovering from 2 year hiatus with daily water change of 10%.

A lot of people also use phosban reactors to run carbon, I plan to do that as well.

I use uv and they really don't harm anything benficial that I can tell. They don't cure much either. They are overataed for pathenogen control. They do help with water clarity.Certainly not a necessary piece of equipment,in my opinion, but helpful with some things.
