Sump Design 40g Sump 40g DT
I will be setting up a 40g Breeder for my next tank, which'll be a full Blown SPS Reef. I need help designing the outline for the sump, basically I need help w/ dimensions and unforseen problems that I may experience. I am a beginner at doing sumps, so please, bear with me.
The Skimmer will be a BK Mini 160 Skimmer (Specs Below) For Aquariums from 50-135 Gallons Baseplate: 18 x 18 cm (7" x 7") Total Height: 55 cm. (21 3/4") 18 Watt/h 600 L/H air 1000 LI/H Water There will be a Tunze Osmolator 3155 coming from a 20g Tank Behind Stand (bringing water from) Bulk Reef Supply Dual Reactor: http://www.bulkreefsupply.com/Carbon...duct_info.html I would also like the main portion of the sump to be used as a Refugium w/ LR and Chaeto. Here is the basic design that Tswifty8 helped me with but it was designed for a 55g Tank, and the sump was around 20-30g. This time the sump will be designed for a 40g Tank and the Sump will also be 40g. The black thing to the left w/ the two pinkish lines coming out of it is the Bulk Reef Supply Reactor and I don't have anything on my plans for the tunze osmolator 3155 Thanks, Steve I have no clue on measurements, but the whole sump measurements would be somewhere along the lines of: 36"x18"x16" Same as the Tank. Also, the Stand is 36" high. |

Hi Steve,
The sump looks doable IMO. Just wondering why you did not do the skimmer chamber, then fuge, then return pump chamber. Not a criticism mind you, just curious. Good luck

Tswifty helped me design it, and I thought it was a good idea. Hopefully he'll be able to chime in on it. I need help if the 40g would be large enough. Not sure.

I don't see how it could be too small at 40 gallons for a 40 gallon DT. As far as the question about order goes, I'm seriously only curious, I'm certain the whole design will be fine. I only used a Rubbermaid tote, poked a hole in it for a bulkhead and started throwing stuff in it myself.

i AM also wondering if a calcium reactor must be run "in" the sump or can it be hung on the side of it?

I have my calcium reactor out of the sump and believe it was meant to be so. I thought that they were all designed that way, but I'm not familiar with any model but my own. My connection are all done with 1/4" tubing from sump to reactor and back to sump.

I'm also a beginer working on a 75g build while i play with my 40g learning expierence.
I beleive the reason for the skimmer on one side, the return in the middle and the fuge on the other side is so you can control the flow the fuge seperate from the skimmer. You typically want less flow through the fuge than the skimmer. By adjusting the ball valve above the skimmer you can regulate how much water the fuge gets. |

That looks great the only thing I would change is maybe consider putting a ballvalve on both the return drops (one on the refugium side). That way you can slow down the water through the refugium if you want to. Other than that its a good design. Just my 2 cents.

i agree with d&k
put on two ball valves unless you want to postion the sump the other way with the fuge on the left - then maybe youd only need one. from what i know you should have most or about 75% of water going to the skimmer and about 25% going to the fuge. looks good to go! |
