im just finishing my plumbing and am ready to fire it up when its full. what should the level of the drain line be at into the sump? entering below water level? over water level? half in water level? this is my last step, thanks

I use Vinyl Tubing for my drain, made it so it goines about 2 inches below the water line and its hard to hear anything from the tank when its closed up. There are times day here day there, where ive had to raise the pipe to barely breaks the surface of the water.

mine is rigid 1 1/2", why do you need to raise it sometimes? so it should be under the water then?

You can place it as far under the water as you like. The issue is generally bubbles. If you don't have a problem with bubbles, then it's not an issue. If bubbles are an issue, then you don't want it more than an inch below the surface. Anything above the surface just makes more noise.

I have my plumbing drop about 8" under the water and it works pretty well.

Running a filter sock will help with bubbles.

I took the advice of others. I wash mine by spraying them with hot water out of the kitchen sink hand held nozzle. I spray both sides by turning the sock inside out. Then when the color of the sock is only slightly tinged, I put them in the washer on regular hot cycle, small load, and 1/4 cup eyeballed bleach. I let them dry for 24-48 hours, then rinse under tap water right before use.

BTW, let the washer fill up to dilute the bleach before adding the socks.

Newclean, appropriate name.

I just turn mine inside out and and kneed the sock in a bucket with a couple inches of purified water. Seems to work pretty well, but I'll have to give the bleach and washer cleaning some thought.

you may want more than just 2, I'd recommend swapping them out at least once a week, but maybe even more often.

They are also great material for cutting up and using in various little ways that you might find over time. I cut one down in size and reglued the seam with silicone glue to make a smaller sock for the drain to my fuge. I put a small piece on eggcrate over the opening where water spills from the fuge to the sump, so not even nerite snails can't get out, but left enough space for water to flow underneath it unimpeded.

Just so you know, if the sock you get seems stiff and wedge shaped, it will turn more sack-like over the course of a week or so. Marine Depot sells a 100 micron with a draw string. The draw string is very handy and cuts down on noise and spray when closed down.

Forgive the stupid question here...but

Do you place the filter sock over the end of the overfolow pipe coming down into the sump? I'm guessing you use the drawstrings to cinch it tight around the pipe?

Yes, on the drain pipe. It will catch everything that comes down the pipe tho. That's why you have to keep it clean.

put it over the drain into the sump, I have 3 and plan on getting more because I change it every 2 to 3 days. I just throw them in the washing machine with hot water and a little bleach. After they run, I run them again mainly to give it an extra rinse. I also do this when my wife is not home so I don't have to hear "You're not putting THAT in MY machine."

I turn mine inside out throw in a scoop of oxy bleach into the washing machine and let it run. Air dry for a couple of days and your good to go. Been doing that for about 5 years now.

I need to raise every once and awhile cause I get large air bubbles occasionally in makes tons of noise when its under water, this is more of my durso pipe that is the cause but its easier to adjust the drain pipe.
