anyone use premixed saltwater?

I'm down to having just a 14 gallon biocube. was thinking and couldn't remember last time I did a water change so I figured it was time.

I went to petco and bought the 5 gallon box of premixed saltwater.
(my ro/di needs some bulk Di resin) the box was $12.

was just wondering if anyone else ever used this stuff and to what extent and sucess......?

all of the tanks at MACNA used it. It's still better to do a wc than not...but in the long run probably cheaper to go back to RODI/mixing it yourself

IMO Instant ocean has been the standard for reef tanks since Basically the start of reef keeping.
I've tried almost every brand and always end up using IO again.

I had a buddy running a nano and purchased the natural ocean water that they have at petco. It's processed cleaned up, but all the levels are supposedly good. Well anyway, thats the brand he used. He kept some softies in there..zoas, xenia, star polyps and things like that. Never used any additives and had wonderful results.

well I have a bucket of IO. that's what I've always used. so I don't mind that's what's in the boxes of premixed.

I saw they had the buckets of salt for $49.99. I thought that was readonable but its been awhile since I bought some.

also isn't reefcrystals made by IO?

I'm pretty sure those buckets of salt are $34 at Salty Critter. You may be paying an extra $15.

When I was at Petco last, i asked about they`re premixed saltwater and the guy told me that they DO NOT use ro water to mix it. Just straight out of the tap. Have you tested it?

no I haven't tested it.

it says no phosphates and no nitrates on the box.

out of curiosity how would he know? they don't box it at the store or anything? but then again maybe he or someone he knew tested it .....?

thanks for the info anaelitz.

thanks Kevin for the pricing info. its been awhile since I bought my bucket (i got it from salty)

guess I should start looking for more DI..... be a lot cheaper in the long run. was thinking of trying to do 3 gallon water changes weekly.... (about 25percent?)

I think people are confusing the bulk premixed water that Petco sells with the BOX of Labeled Natural Sea Water. I believe that it may be from Nutri Sea Water. http://www.nutriseawater.com/
FYI The water that bulk Petco sells is RO/Saltwater. I have never used it however. If they maintain their RO in similar manner to everything else, I make sure that I test it.

Salty Critter has instant ocean salt in the bucket (150 gal) for 36.99, a 200 gal mix box for 39.99 or 50 gal mix bags for 12.99
