Shut down closed loop

seeing that many wavemakers have a night mode, can I do this with my closed loop. I will still have 2400 gph from return

If the pump is below the sump's waterline so that it doesn't need ot be primed, then it should be fine. You can then just slap a timer on it. . Restarting a regular pump doesn't pose the same problems as restarting a powerhead.

as said, the ocean does not shut off at night

as well do this:

shut down your closed loop for the night, then the next morning crack a union by your pump and smell the water. Then ask yourself if shutting the pump down at night is a good idea.

Depending ont he size of yoru closed loop it may not make very much difference. With the amount of pipe I have in my closed loops if I shut them off for more than 4 hours I will dump the majority of water out of the lines before I will start the loop back up.
