Problems with Cheato and Calurpa
I'm having problems everytime I put some cheato or calurpa in my sump. Whenever I do, it gets over run with algea and cyano and looks just horrible overall. I have a light on it 24/7 and the flow in the fuge section of my sump is great. What could be the problem?

Not sure if it will address the prob, but cut the light down. Cheato prefers a dark period. I run my fuge light 14hrs and flow is about 200gph.

I would run the lighting for the chaeto opposite the lighting on the tank. what bulb are you using? That makes a big difference I was never able to keep chaeto in my sump until o got the correct bulb. I am using a 5500k bulb that I bought at target I never have grown so much chaeto ever

I agree with the others, running lights 24/7 in your fuge will definitely create cyano; just cut it to 8 hours a night while you sleep if you don't have a timer.

You have 2 options:
Optimize conditions for chaeto and caulerpa or... http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/sh...5&pagenumber=1 We want a beutiful tanK... If you dont mind growth horrible things in your sump. All ugly things you win in your sump, your tank will be free of them... Ugly and lightened sump, beutiful tank... |

When the problem is green hair algae, adding iron often helps the macroalgae at the expense of the microalgae. That is not necessarily going to help with the cyano, however, Refugia often get problem cyano coating the macroalgae and it can be hard to reduce.

It's actually calurpa in the sump. Knowing that, should I still run the light on the fuge for 8 hrs. at night?

No Macro algae will do well under a 24 hour light cycle. It all needs a dark time. Run your sump lights opposite your tank lights. 8 hours is plenty for your algae. Also keep in mind that algae in the sump is good as long as it's keeping algae out of your display. Cyano can best be battled with additional flow. Keep in mind that most people have way to little flow in their sump/fuges. Add a small power head in your refugium area.

That's just not true. I've grown my Caulerpa racemosa for many years under 24/7 lighting, and find that works better (i.e., grows more) than when I experimented with a dark period.

I thought 24/7 was ok as well. I'll try the 8 hours and see what happens.
